I find Seth Godin – this out of the box marketing guru – MAGNIFICENT. Passionate, funny, brave, confident in life, he truly appreciates authenticity and the uniqueness that every person possesses.
By nature, I’ve always been the kind of person who tends to trust people and, even when my instinct tells me I shouldn’t, I sometimes hope it’s wrong, because I like to believe everyone is honest, sincere, and reliable (we can all become better people, if we really want to!). Negative life experiences didn’t destroy my trust, though I always try to be careful!
Trust. Connections. They’re the future of our society and economy, if we want to be truly successful. They are ART. As Seth Godin explains in this inspiring and vibrant book, art is not something we can limit and put in categories anymore. Art is “new, complex, and vital”, like my favourite author, Oscar Wilde, wrote.
They instilled in our heads we’d better stay in the safe zone (like a safe job with a regular salary), that very few can be artists, and that if we weren’t born an artist we’re doomed… so we’d better fly low.
Haven’t you heard about what happened to that fool of Icarus? His father told him to be careful, not to fly too high, but he didn’t listen! Too bad for him!
And too bad for you for wanting to create something new, who trust yourself and your ability to make a difference, who refuse to stay in your golden prison! Careful! You’ve been warned!
But, as Seth points out, Daedalus also warned his soon not to fly too low, too close to the sea. So why, when they tell us about this myth, they only emphasize the first part of the advice?
Yes, flying high is risky, but it’s also the only way to be finally free and successful.
We complain about the job we hate and the related stress, we even fall sick (our wise body sends us messages to warn us should change something in our life), but there’s no way we’d leave the safe zone to be ourselves and free our potential! No way, we’d rather stay where we are and take anti-depressants, as long as every month we receive our salary to survive, so hopefully, when we retire (if we ever will), we’ll have the chance to do what we really enjoy.
We live a life of sacrifice and repression in exchange for a few, peaceful years. Years that are not guaranteed, by the way.
So why wait? Why don’t we take advantage of these times, when jobs are not safe anymore, to finally do what we love and can do better?
New generations come into the world already afraid, carrying their parents’ fear that they won’t find a job when they grow up, that they won’t be able to buy a house and start a family. But things can change and it's only up to us... so take your life in your hands and, like Seth Godin suggests, stop behaving like a slave for a feeble hope that your boss or CEO will notice you and invite you to lunch someday, stop waiting for others to give you all you need, and start being the leader in your life. Do not wait for others to choose you: choose yourself and make a difference!

NON AVER PAURA DI VOLARE: su Quel pollo di Icaro, di Seth Godin, Parte 1
Io trovo che Seth Godin, questo guru del marketing fuori dagli schemi, sia MAGNIFICO. Appassionato, divertente e coraggioso, ha fiducia nella vita e ama l’autenticità e l'unicità che ogni essere umano possiede.
Per natura, tendo a dare fiducia al prossimo e, anche quando il mio istinto mi dice di non fidarmi, a volte spesso che si sbagli, perché mi piace credere che tutti siano sinceri, onesti e affidabili (tutti possiamo diventare persone migliori, se vìlo vogliamo davvero!). Le esperienze negative della vita non hanno scalfito questo mio aspetto, sebbene sia sempre cauta!
Fiducia. Connessioni. Esse sono il futuro della società e dell’economia, se si vuole avere successo. Esse sono ARTE. Come Seth Godin spiega in questo ispirante e brillante libro, l’arte non è più qualcosa che si può limitare e incasellare in poche categorie, come è stato fatto fin’ora. L’arte è “nuova, complessa e vitale”, come scrisse il mio autore preferito, Oscar Wilde.
Ci hanno inculcato che è meglio rimanere nella zona sicura (come un impiego con stipendio sicuro), che pochissimi possono essere artisti, che artisti si nasce e se non ci sei nato sei spacciato, quindi è meglio se voli a bassa quota.
Non hai sentito cosa accadde a quello stolto di Icaro? Il padre glielo disse, eh, di stare attento, di non volare troppo in alto, ma lui non ascoltò! Peggio per lui!
E peggio per te, che vuoi creare qualcosa di tuo, che hai fiducia in te stesso e nella tua capacità di fare la differenza, che non vuoi stare nella nostra prigione dorata! Attenzione! Sei avvisato!
Ma, come fa notare il buon Seth, Dedalo avvertì il figlio anche di non volare troppo basso, di non volare troppo vicino al mare.
E allora come mai quando ci raccontano il mito, sottolineano solo il primo ammonimento?
Volare alto è sì, più rischioso, ma è anche l’unico luogo dove si può finalmente essere liberi e avere davvero successo.
Ci lamentiamo che il nostro lavoro non ci piace e che ci stressa, addirittura ci ammaliamo (il nostro corpo è saggio e cerca sempre di avvisarci quando abbiamo bisogno di cambiare qualcosa nella nostra vita), ma guai a rinunciare a quella sicurezza per essere noi stessi e liberare il nostro potenziale! No, no, meglio stare lì e imbottirci di antidepressivi, almeno ogni mese arrivano i soldini per sopravvivere e, se tutto va bene, con la pensione (se mai la avremo) potremo finalmente fare quello che ci piace.
Così viviamo una vita di sacrifici e repressione in cambio di un breve periodo di pace, un periodo che non è comunque garantito.
Ma perché aspettare e non farlo ora? Perché non approfittare di questi tempi in cui il lavoro sicuro non esiste più, per fare finalmente quello che sappiamo fare meglio e ci gratifica?
Le nuove generazioni nascono già con la paura dentro, la paura dei genitori che i figli non trovino lavoro quando crescono, che non si possano “sistemare”.
Il sistema non accetta che le persone non vogliono più rimanere bloccate nei vecchi schemi e nelle vecchie usanze… quindi prendi in mano la tua vita e, come dice Seth Godin, smetti di fare lo schiavo nella flebile speranza che un giorno il tuo capo o l’amministratore delegato della tua azienda si accorgano di te e ti invitino a pranzo per darti quello di cui hai bisogno: diventa il leader della tua vita e non aspettare che gli altri ti scelgano: scegliti tu e fai la differenza!
