Miss Austen
In 1840, Cassandra Austen decides to show up unannounced at the vicarage of the Fowle family, that has to be vacated after the vicar's death. Once, (in 1795) Cassandra was engaged to Thomas Fowle, but he died of yellow fever in the west Indies, and all the Austen family was closed to the Fowle (Eliza Lloyd married Thomas's brother and her sisters married two Austen brothers). Her visit comes unexpected and unwelcome, but she doesn't care as she's there for a great purpose: to find the letters her sister Jane wrote to Eliza and dispose of the ones that might damage Jane's reputation, who died years ago and is nowquite famous. All this has to be done in secret, as she obviously cannot ask for letters that do not belong to her.
So we follow Cassandra's deeds and at the same time we glimpse into the young Austen girls life, through Jane's letters and the narrator.
Miss Austen is an historical novel praised by most of the British critics and Gill Hornby has done a great and brave job recreating Jane Austen's letters. I really admire historical novelists, writing an accurate historical novel it's not at all easy, especially if you decide to write it in old-style grammar. But writing about Jane Austen? And on her behalf? That's daring!
As the Claire Harman writes in the Literary Review, "Hornby manages to stay basically credible [...] and does amazingly well in the riskiest area of all, the invention of letters ostensibly written by Jane".
If you're a Jane Austen fan you should definitely read it!

Nel 1840, Cassandra Austen decide di presentarsi senza avviso alla canonica della famiglia Fowle, che deve essere sgombrata per via della morte del reverendo. Un tempo (nel 1795) Cassandra era fidanzata con Thomas Fowle, che però morì di febbre gialla nelle Indie occidentali, e tutta la famiglia Austen era molto legata ai Fowle (Eliza Lloyd sposò il fratello di Tom e le sue sorelle sposarono due fratelli Austen). La sua visita arriva quindi inaspettata e sgradita, ma lei non se ne cura poiché si trova lì per una grande missione: trovare le lettere che sua sorella Jane scrisse a Eliza e sbarazzarsi di quelle che potrebbero compromettere la reputazione di Jane, ormai deceduta da anni ma molto famosa. Tutto questo deve essere svolto in segreto, dato che ovviamente Cassandra non può chiedere di avere lettere che non le appartengono.
Seguiamo così le azioni di Cassandra e al contempo sbirciamo nella vita delle giovani ragazze Austen, attraverso le lettere di Jane e il racconto della narratrice.
Miss Austen è un romanzo storico lodato dalla maggior parte dei critici inglesi e Gill Hornby ha fatto un ottimo lavoro nel ricreare le lettere di Jane Austen. Ammiro molto chi scrive romanzi storici, creare un romanzo storico accurato è tutt'altro che facile, specialmente se si decide di scriverlo usando la lingua del tempo. Ma scrivere di Jane Austen? E per suo conto? Questo sì che è audace!
Come Claire Harman scrive sulla Literary Review, "La Hornby riesce a rimanere sostanzialmente credibile [...] e riesce particolarmente bene nell'area più rischiosa di tutte, l'invenzione delle lettere apparentemente scritte da Jane."
Se siete fan di Jane Austen, dovreste decisamente leggere questo romanzo!
